Happy Sunday! 🦋

I recently went to an author talk with Min Jin Lee (Pachinko, American Hagwon), in conversation with Ilyon Woo (Master Slave Husband Wife). It was a beautiful and powerful exchange between two best-selling authors who spoke candidly, honestly, and with heart.

There was one moment in particular that got me a little emotional. Though several years apart, the two attended Yale, and Woo spoke about how when Lee was there she was instrumental in bringing Korean language studies to the University. Lee co-founded the Korean Studies Task Force as a student. I don’t remember the exact words, but she then went on to say that because of the work that Min Jin put in, she was able to learn Korean and in turn, her children would too.

It made me emotional because it reminded me that the things we do, big or small, the efforts we make, the fights we fight, not only are for our own benefit, but can have an profound effect on others. I’ve seen that play out in my own life. Throughout my career one of my favorite things to do has been to read to children at schools, camps, schools, and other youth programs. I’ve had some of these children reach out to me, as adults with children of their own, and tell me that they remember me reading to them and how much it meant. How rich in life I feel after hearing something like this.

There’s a lot of talk about “finding your purpose” in life, and I think we all should keep in mind that our purpose isn’t always this grand idea or title. Our purpose can, and usually does, play out in some of the simple things we do. The conversations we have, the recommendations and ideas we share, the encouragement we give. Some of these are done directly with others, some on social media, and others told secondhand. And all can make a difference in someone else’s life.

So I encourage you to keep sharing, keep talking, keep fighting. Someone is listening and being inspired. Not convinced? Think about the things that have had an effect on you even without the other person knowing. If it’s done it for you, I promise you, you’ve done it for others. Keep going.

Have a great week!
