Happy Sunday! ☔
There’s a scene in a Kdrama I recently watched called Sold Out on You. It’s about a woman who is a host on a home shopping network. She travels to the countryside to meet the owner of a farm that produces a special mushroom needed for a cosmetic product they want to sell.
In this village, there’s a grumpy bus driver who takes all his frustrations out on the passengers, mostly elderly people. The young owner of the farm confronts him to be better to the people.
One day, one of the women who rides the bus brings him a bag and gives him some food telling him she’s sure he doesn’t have time to eat. Later, the farm owner drops off bags of rice outside the driver’s door, surprising him when he comes home. When he finally opens up the bag the woman gave him that morning, it’s a couple ears of corn and some money with a note telling him it’s for baby formula.
The next morning he stops the bus, stands before the people, and bows to apologize for how he’s acted toward them. He explains that he’s been struggling, and will do better. The passengers smile and applaud.
It had me in tears because we hear all the time, “be kind, you never know what people are going through,” and this was that reminder in action. One of the hardest things to do is to be kind, or even to not respond, when someone is being nasty to you. And this is tough because even if someone is going through a tough time, taking it out on other people isn’t right either. Especially when they don’t deserve being the target of their harsh words and actions.
Some people are able to immediately respond with kindness when someone lashes out at them. I think it takes a very special person to do that, and I will admit that while I try, that isn’t always my first reaction. I will say that I’ve gotten better at trying to understand where people are coming from, and realize that sometimes it’s better to walk away.
I share this because I have noticed, and I’m sure you have too, that many people are walking around frustrated and angry. And I get it, there’s plenty to be frustrated and angry about. And maybe it’s too hard to be kind to that person lashing out at you, but maybe you can be kind to someone else, or do something that puts more kindness in the world. It may not help the situation right in front of you, but I do believe that the more of it we have circulating out in the world, we may start to see a positive change. At least that’s the hope I’m holding onto.
Hope you have a great week and you experience nothing but kindness from others!
Positively yours,
